Understanding the Tick Population in Omaha
Ticks are arachnids and external parasites. They have flat, oval-shaped bodies and eight legs. Depending on the type of tick you encounter, they can vary from grayish-white, reddish-brown, brown, black, or yellow. Lonestar ticks, dog ticks, Rocky Mountain spotted wood ticks, and deer ticks are native species in our area, so you'll most likely see reddish-brown, brown, or black ticks.
Ticks don't have wings and can't jump, so they find potential hosts by hanging out in tall grasses, shrubs, or underbrush and waiting for a host to pass by. The process of ticks finding a new host is called "questing."
Although tick infestations don't usually occur indoors, these pests can be a big concern in your yard and sometimes make their way indoors. Omaha’s peak tick season is May through June, so late spring is the perfect time to renew your tick protections and get advice from a seasoned tick control professional.
Comprehensive Flea Prevention for Your Home
Omaha is home to several species of fleas, the most common being the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) and the dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis). Despite their names, both types readily infest other animals and can even bite humans. Cat fleas, in particular, are notorious for feeding on cats, dogs, and wildlife. Fleas of all types can easily migrate from your pets to carpets, furniture, and even onto humans, causing discomfort and potential health issues. Diseases spread by fleas include murine typhus and cat scratch disease (CSD).

How do ticks make their way into my yard in the first place?
While ticks can get into your yard on their own, there is a good chance they got there on another host. Common hosts of ticks are birds, rodents, and wildlife such as raccoons and squirrels. To keep these animals from bringing ticks into your yard, you should install or repair damaged fencing to discourage them. It will also help if you remove food and water sources, as well as harborage areas and entry points into your home.

Should I be worried about any diseases caused by ticks?
Not all ticks carry diseases, but it's impossible to tell which do, so you should always take precautions. The diseases spread by ticksvary depending on the species. Lonestar ticks can spread ehrlichiosis, tularemia, Heartland virus, Bourbon virus, and southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI). Dog ticks can spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Boutonneuse fever. Rocky Mountain spotted wood ticks can spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, tularemia, and tick paralysis. Deer ticks can spread Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, B. miyamotoi disease, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, and Powassan virus.
However, a tick must be attached for thirty-six hours to transmit diseases. Still, they may go unnoted due to the anesthetic this pest injects when they bite.

What do I do if there is a tick on me, my pet, or someone else?
If you find a tick on someone or a pet, use a fine-tip pair of tweezers, grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, and pull it straight up. Don't twist or jerk as you pull; you could risk leaving parts of the tick behind. After you have removed the tick, wash the affected area with warm water and soap. Keep an eye out for symptoms and seek medical attention if you are concerned.
To dispose of a tick, seal it in a plastic bag or flush it; never crush it with bare hands.
How Quality Pest Control Protects Your Property
We work directly with our customers to provide flea and tick treatments that meet their specific needs instead of relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. Using integrated pest management techniques, we identify the problem, address the factors attracting the pests and allowing them to survive, apply targeted materials, achieve control of the situation, and finally implement long-term protection.
However, you don’t need to wait for our team to start dealing with your flea and tick problems. There are a few steps you can take that, when combined with professional services, can help you limit your exposure to fleas and ticks.
In addition to professional treatments, we recommend that our customers take steps like:
- Staying vigilant: Check yourself, pets, and family members for ticks after spending time outside.
- Dressing appropriately: If you plan on spending time in wooded areas or somewhere with tall grass, like along a lake or pond, it's a good idea to wear long clothing. Wearing dark-colored clothes also makes it more challenging for these pests to spot you.
- Protecting your pets: Talk to your veterinarian to have your pets on a year-round tick preventative.
